Labs and Start-up Symposium/Showcase

Many airlines and airports have launched their own Innovation Labs with the aim of engaging with start-ups and equipping themselves with digital capabilities and new business ideas that will help them reimagine the future of the air transport business. This stream will bring together the protagonists in this space to find out what they are working on, and to get their take on how technology and passenger behaviour will change over the next 10 years. We will also get the best ideas from start-ups, and how to work with them, through this new conference stream as well as via our new Awards, and exhibition showcase area, dedicated to them.

Day 1 is a joint day of sessions for all participants.

Tuesday 5th September 17:30 - 21:00

Challenges and opportunities to be debated:

  • Considering a business case for a lab – in-house innovation lab vs incubator/accelerator
  • Establishing a lab – model, resourcing, facilities, culture, targets
  • Engaging with start-ups, and not stifling them with corporate mindsets/approaches
  • Engaging with incubators and accelerators
  • Identifying which technologies and trends to focus on
  • Establishing agile working practices and new working methods
  • Co-creation, hackathon and collaboration efforts
  • Ensuring innovation occurs across the organisation, and not just in the lab
  • Taking ideas from ideation to permanent implementation
  • Should Labs be designing and manufacturing products, or should that be left to suppliers?

Seventh Working Session

Working Groups:

Inflight delight: Designing passenger experience to set your airline apart

From cabin design to connectivity, airlines are looking for ways to differentiate themselves to win the hearts, minds and miles of passengers. Artefact (which has worked with Panasonic Avionics, Thales, Alaska Air, and more) will demonstrate how to use design thinking to identify moments of “inflight delight” that your airline is doing well from a passenger perspective and strategies for amplifying client satisfaction throughout the inflight experience. By dialing up what delights your customers, you can set your airline apart by pulling ahead in passenger experience.

Through a mix of tactical activities and emerging industry trends, participants will gain experience in how to innovate and design to delight customers.  The workshop will help participants identify opportunities to delight customers along the end-to-end flight experience, generate innovative ideas that draw inspiration from emerging technology trends, and select the ideas that will most greatly benefit both customers and the business.

Led by senior executives from Artefact

Session Overview:

This will be a facilitated, interactive session where participants will be asked to engage and provide suggestions on strategies to improve passenger facilitation and security at airports. The session will start with a 5-minute overview provided by the four government and international experts that will cover various programs and initiatives underway to improve security. After the briefings, the bulk of the session will consist of attendees breaking out into four stations in the room. Each station will cover various points in the passenger’s journey through the airport:

  • Curbside: (effects of TNCs; public area security vulnerabilities and considerations)
  • Check In: (how to improve security and push the checkpoint further out into the terminal)
  • Checkpoint: (technologies/capabilities/data needed to improve checkpoint performance)
  • Post-Security/Gate: (securing the secure side; communication and emergency plans; automatic gates)

Each station will have a facilitator to ask leading questions and capture notes regarding suggestions. The aim is to have 10 minutes of discussion at each station, then 2 minutes to rotate over to the next station. Each participant will provide input on the four topics. At the end of the hour, each station will report out on common themes/recommendations.
