JFKIAT – the operator of Terminal 4 at JFK Airport and a Corporate Partner of the FTE Digital, Innovation & Startup Hub – has developed a new solution in collaboration with Volan Technology and Beonic, which offers real-time tracking of complimentary passenger mobility carts. This enables travellers to see the carts’ exact locations and estimated wait times. The live updates appear on digital displays throughout the terminal.
Volan’s wireless beacon network provides cart positioning and is accurate within metres throughout both concourses and the retail hall. Then, Beonic’s system analyses wait times and broadcasts them onto the large digital displays at two pickup locations, along with a visualisation of each cart’s present location. The analytics also allow JFKIAT partners to make better decisions about cart availability and driver staffing at peak demand times to improve the passenger experience. It paves the way for expanding the solution to track other terminal equipment in real time, which could have incredible impacts.
“Giving passengers real-time information helps to support a smoother airport experience,” said Roel Huinink, President and CEO, JFKIAT. “By enabling live tracking of our cart service at Terminal 4, we’re helping our travellers who prefer or need assistance over longer distances make more informed choices. As the transformation of T4 continues, we are pleased to work with our partners to introduce this innovative technology to advance passenger accessibility and operational efficiency.”
