Schiphol to enhance CX and sustainability with €10bn investment programme to 2035

With an investment programme of €10 billion until 2035, Schiphol wants to build better and more sustainable infrastructure, including a new terminal and renovated piers, as it further enhances customer experience.

With an investment programme of €10 billion until 2035, Schiphol – a Corporate Partner of the FTE Digital, Innovation & Startup Hub – wants to build better and more sustainable infrastructure, including a new terminal and renovated piers. The airport aims to return to the top three European hub airports by delivering quality to travellers, employees and airlines, and by striking a balance with the environment and society. An important part of achieving a better balance is making the airport quieter and reducing emissions produced by and at Schiphol.

Schiphol also wants to use the investments to further improve working conditions. It will continue to implement innovations that make working at the airport healthier and less strenuous. These include baggage robots, underground systems for quickly transferring suitcases and goods, and reducing exposure to ultrafine particles.

“For more than a century, Schiphol has been a home for world travellers, a hub for goods and a cornerstone of our economy,” said Pieter van Oord, CEO, Royal Schiphol Group. “With our plans for the future, we want to maintain and strengthen that position and contribute to the progress of the Netherlands. Our future can be summed up in two words: quality and balance. This is how we keep the Netherlands moving and make a small country great. With a high-quality airport that serves the Netherlands.”

In the Schiphol Centre Master Plan, the airport has described what it believes Schiphol Centre should ideally look like by 2050:

  • New Terminal South: Plan for the construction of a new terminal with plenty of light, space and peace and quiet. This will ensure a pleasant travel experience for future travellers. Schiphol will retain its unique design and one-terminal concept, with everything under one roof and within walking distance.
  • Renovation and sustainability improvements to piers: Schiphol will open Pier A in 2027 and then renovate Piers B, C, D and H/M. Less sustainable piers will be replaced and more space for travellers and larger, quieter, cleaner aircraft will be created. According to the plan, additional gates will be needed for the largest aircraft.
  • More space, renovated catering facilities, shops and seating areas: Plan to renovate traveller areas and lounges to further improve the travel experience. The recently renovated Lounge 1 already shows how Schiphol is becoming more spacious, modern and comfortable.
  • Better accessibility: Schiphol is improving the roads in and around the airport and working on public transport, including plans for a new metro line between Amsterdam, Schiphol and Hoofddorp. This will ensure that the airport remains easily accessible for everyone who works there or travels through it. Better accessibility also contributes to the airport’s resilience.

Schiphol is currently working on the phasing of the proposed construction projects. It is consulting with airlines and other parties involved regarding user requirements, planning, phasing and costs.

The Schiphol Centre Master Plan illustrates what Schiphol will look like in 2050 according to the current plans. In addition, Schiphol Group has a new strategic plan for the 2025 to 2035 period.
