Amsterdam Airport Schiphol’s Lounge 1, the airside area for passengers travelling to Schengen destinations, is to undergo a passenger-centred transformation from the end of 2022.

Schiphol is extending the lounge, making adjustments to walkways, and expanding the range of retail and food & beverage facilities with 23 new concepts located around the lounge’s two central plazas.

The new design is centred around the passenger experience, with a focus on making wayfinding easier. The lounge will be divided into three areas, each with its own look and feel, but which form a natural whole thanks to their colour, layout and materials.

There is also a focus on sustainability and circularity. During the redevelopment, more than 90% of materials will be recycled and installations consuming a lot of energy will be replaced with more efficient alternatives. The sustainability focus is in line with Schiphol’s ambition to become a zero-waste airport by 2030.

Preparatory works are being undertaken, with the redevelopment to start in 2023. Lounge 1 will remain accessible to travellers throughout the project.
