Lufthansa elevates short-haul comfort with A320 cabin modernisation programme

Lufthansa is modernising 38 A320 aircraft with new seats, larger overhead bins and in-seat USB power, aligning its short- and medium-haul cabins with long-haul standards while improving comfort and boarding efficiency.

Summary:

  • Lufthansa is retrofitting 38 Airbus A320 aircraft with new seats, larger overhead bins and integrated USB power to elevate the short- and medium-haul passenger experience.
  • New ergonomically designed seats from Geven, adjustable headrests and enhanced Business Class recline align the narrowbody cabin with Lufthansa’s latest long-haul product standards.
  • Overhead bins 40% larger enable vertical bag stowage, supporting faster boarding, improved operational efficiency and a cleaner, more modern cabin aesthetic.

Lufthansa is offering travellers more comfort and a modernised cabin product not only on long-haul routes, but also on short- and medium-haul flights. A total of 38 A320 aircraft have been undergoing retrofits since spring of last year, receiving new seats from manufacturer Geven as well as significantly larger overhead bins, USB ports at every seat, and tablet and smartphone holders.

“Our ambition is clear: we want to offer our guests a premium experience on short- and medium-haul routes as well,” said Lufthansa Airlines CEO Jens Ritter. “The A320 family is our largest fleet – that’s why we’re investing in the modernisation of more than 30 aircraft. We’re presenting our guests with a modern, high-quality cabin whose design is inspired by our new long-haul deliveries. Our guests can look forward to more comfort and significantly more space for their carry-on baggage.”

The first Airbus A320 is now fully modernised. By 2029, 38 Airbus A320s are scheduled to be converted.

The new, ergonomically designed seats from Italian manufacturer Geven offer passengers more comfort than the previous seats. Comfort is further enhanced by horizontally adjustable headrests and in Business Class a backrest that reclines especially far.

The new cabin is equipped with overhead bins that are 40% larger and offer space for significantly more carry-on suitcases or bags. The reason is that baggage can now be stowed vertically. This also makes boarding more efficient, as passengers can stow their luggage more quickly. The clean design of the new bins aims to create a fresh and modern overall impression of the cabin.

Meanwhile, every seat receives its own USB-A and USB-C port, allowing mobile devices to be charged. In addition, all seats are equipped with a holder for tablets and smartphones. This allows travellers to watch films and series particularly easily and comfortably on their own devices.
