Summary:

  • American Airlines has introduced a new app feature that automatically monitors seat availability and moves eligible AAdvantage members to a preferred seat when one becomes available.
  • Customers can select preferences such as a window, aisle or middle seat after booking, with the feature monitoring availability up to 24 hours before departure.
  • Developed through American’s ADEPT technology programme, the capability uses automation and AI-enabled tools to reduce routine tasks and create a more seamless digital passenger experience.

American Airlines has introduced a new feature in its mobile app that automatically monitors seat availability based on individual passenger preferences, reducing the need for customers to repeatedly check the seat map before their flight.

Eligible AAdvantage members travelling on single-passenger reservations can opt in after completing their booking and specify their preferred seat characteristics, including a window, aisle or middle seat.

The feature then monitors availability and, if a matching eligible seat becomes available, automatically updates the reservation and notifies the customer. Seat changes are limited to eligible seats within the passenger’s existing cabin and do not result in additional seat charges.

The feature is available up to 24 hours before departure, giving eligible customers greater control over their seat preferences while reducing the amount of manual trip management required.

“At American, we’re always looking for ways to make travel easier and more personalised for our customers,” said Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines. “This latest innovation proactively addresses customer preference. It is a simple experience that gives customers more control while asking them to do less.”

The capability was developed through American’s ADEPT programme, a two-year initiative designed to recruit and develop early-career technology talent while giving participants hands-on experience of agile technology delivery and business workflow improvements.

The project began by addressing a common customer friction point: having to repeatedly return to the seat map to check whether a preferred seat had become available. The ADEPT and Customer Experience teams developed a digital experience that monitors availability, evaluates stated preferences and applies eligibility requirements automatically.

“This latest technology launch shows what can happen when we give talented technologists a meaningful customer problem and the space to solve it,” said Ganesh Jayaram, Chief Digital and Information Officer at American Airlines. “The ADEPT team paired fresh thinking with the scale and experience of teams across American to build something practical: technology that removes work from the customer and makes the travel experience feel more seamless.”

The development process also incorporated AI-enabled tools to streamline elements of design and development, helping the team move from concept to deployment while focusing on a defined customer need.

The new seat monitoring capability forms part of American’s broader shift towards digital experiences designed to simplify the passenger journey, using automation to manage routine tasks while giving customers greater control over their travel preferences.
