Norwegian travel tech company BagID – a Partner of the FTE Baggage Innovation Working Group and a Gold Sponsor of FTE Global (Long Beach, California, 9 to 11 September 2025) – has signed an up to €1.75 million, two-year contract with Aena, the world’s largest airport operator by number of passengers, to customise and implement a groundbreaking digital baggage solution across Spanish airports.
The partnership is the result of BagID’s successful participation in the Aena Ventures Accelerator Program, where it won the ‘Airport Efficiency’ category, emerging as one of five startups selected from over 500 applicants across 42 countries. Over six months, BagID worked closely with Aena mentors to pilot its solution in airports including Gran Canaria Airport, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, and Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, culminating in a live Demo Day presentation.
“This project stems from our commitment to improving the operational efficiency of our airports through enhanced baggage tracking and monitoring,” said Álvaro Ríos Álvarez, Engineer of Applied Innovation, Aena. “Our Aena Ventures Program enables us to connect with startups like BagID, whose innovative vision is key to driving progress in our sector.”
The contract will create a collaborative platform and baggage tracking solution to be deployed at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat and Palma de Mallorca airports.
BagID is one of only two global providers of electronic bag tags and the only one offering a combined solution for digital check-in and baggage tracking. The EBT will play a critical role in both passenger experience and back-end data collection for the collaborative platform.
“We truly believe in our ability to make a difference and contribute to a future where travelling with checked bags will be more stress-free, seamless and sustainable,” said Ina Eldøy, CEO, BagID. “With the Aena contract we have received both recognition and a great opportunity from the world’s largest airport operator. We are honoured and grateful, and ready for take-off.”
With the number of global air passengers expected to double by 2040 (source: SITA IT Baggage Report 2024), solutions that streamline baggage handling and improve airport efficiency are urgently needed. With innovative solutions that leverage the opportunities offered by technology and data integrated into a collaboration platform, BagID helps address these challenges while also providing travellers with a better user experience.
