MSP launches major concessions redevelopment with 47 new venues planned

MSP is planning its largest concessions redevelopment in over a decade, covering 80,000 sq ft and paving the way for 47 new venues across both terminals, focused on more choice, convenience and improved passenger dwell space.

Summary:

  • MSP concessions redevelopment launches a major programme to open 47 new venues across both terminals by 2029.
  • New MSP RFP covers 80,000 sq ft of space, seeking food & beverage, retail, convenience and spa concepts aligned with traveller trends.
  • Passenger experience upgrades focus on coffee access, quick service options, improved convenience retail and enhanced dwell space.

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) will undergo its most significant concessions redevelopment in more than a decade to open 47 new venues across its two terminals by 2029. A request for proposals (RFP) has been released, outlining the redevelopment of 80,000 square feet – 40% of MSP’s total concessions programme – for food & beverage, retail, news and convenience, and spa venues.

“We’ve developed an RFP based on a tremendous amount of research about what travellers and customers want while also leaning into emerging trends both in and outside the industry,” said Isabella Rhawie, Vice President and Commercial Revenue Officer, Metropolitan Airports Commission. “We’re looking to curate a strong mix of national and Minnesota-based businesses to offer more choices, brands and experiences for MSP passengers.”

The RFP outlines concession types grouped into 10 proposal batches, or leases, with specific unit locations across Terminal 1 (five concourses and the Airport Mall) and Terminal 2.

Metropolitan Airports Commission’s concessions programme developed the RFP to bring in a fresh line-up of concepts that focus on these high-value customer desires:

  • Increased access to coffee
  • More local or national quick-service brand options
  • Improved convenience with food markets and shop-in-shop retail
  • Enhanced passenger dwell space in the Terminal 1 Airport Mall

This RFP complements a smaller concessions makeover currently underway in Terminal 2 consisting of eight new units. The first of those venues opened this spring. The final units will open in conjunction with the completion of the Terminal 2 North Expansion project in early 2027. The new venues are Hometown Market, Caribou Coffee, Subway, McDonald’s, illycaffè (pre-security) and B.A.R. Flights, along with Caribou Coffee and Lucky’s 13, located in the new north expansion.
