Iberia launches Starlink-powered high-speed onboard connectivity across first aircraft

Iberia has introduced Starlink-powered onboard connectivity on the first aircraft in its fleet, delivering high-speed, free WiFi across all cabins. The service enables seamless gate-to-gate internet access for all passengers.

Summary:

  • Iberia has launched the first aircraft in its fleet equipped with Starlink’s high-speed satellite connectivity technology, delivering enhanced onboard internet access.
  • The service provides free, gate-to-gate WiFi across all cabins with speeds of up to 500 Mbps, enabling streaming, video calls and remote working.
  • The rollout marks Iberia as the first Spanish airline to deploy SpaceX’s Starlink connectivity, advancing its wider digital transformation strategy.

Iberia – a member of International Airlines Group (a Corporate Partner of the FTE Digital, Innovation & Startup Hub) – has launched the first aircraft in its fleet to feature Starlink’s advanced connectivity technology, allowing customers to enjoy high-speed internet access virtually anywhere in the world.

With this new and enhanced onboard connectivity system, Iberia becomes the first Spanish airline to incorporate reliable satellite connectivity technology engineered by SpaceX. The system is designed to support multiple devices simultaneously and ensures a seamless experience for all customers. Connectivity is faster and more stable than traditional systems thanks to Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellite constellation, powered by thousands of satellites.

The new service will be free for customers in all cabins – Economy, Premium Economy and Business – and will provide a home-like connectivity experience, with speeds of up to 500 Mbps. This will enable high-bandwidth activities such as streaming live events, video calls, online gaming, simultaneous browsing and remote working. In addition, connectivity will be available throughout the entire travel experience, from boarding to arrival (gate-to-gate), delivering a smoother and more consistent digital experience onboard.

“We are delighted to become the first Spanish airline to offer the fastest onboard internet connection currently available on the market,” said Beatriz Guillén, Director of Customer Experience, Iberia. “We know that staying connected gate-to-gate is very important for our customers, whether they are travelling for business or leisure, and thanks to this new service we will significantly enhance their onboard experience. Furthermore, this project reflects our commitment to innovation and digitalisation, two key pillars of Flight Plan 2030.”

This milestone has been made possible thanks to the strategic partnership that International Airlines Group signed with Starlink last November.

The company’s roadmap includes investments totalling €6 billion in key areas such as customer experience, artificial intelligence, fleet renewal and the development of Ciudad Iberia, a leading aviation innovation hub.
