FTE and APEX conferences are renowned for being the most forward-looking in the industry and our 2020 Virtual Expo speaker line-up was the most impressive we have put together in our collective history. It delivered a memorable learning experience by providing progressive insights from industry leaders, technology giants, disruptors, parallel industries, academia and startups and our plans are just as ambitious for our 2021 event.
Unparalleled disruption for the air transport and travel sector is underway because of COVID-19. Our virtual conference will provide critical insights and learnings to all attendees to help them understand the future trends and successful transformation strategies that will help businesses survive, bounce back, and future-proof their propositions.
The conference will be split into CEO, Airport, Inflight, Commercial and Digital sessions, which will focus on a wide range of the most pertinent topics, including: Health Passports & Biosecurity; Touchless & Socially Distanced Travel; Digital Transformation & Automation; Cost Reduction & Operational Efficiency; Reimagined Guest Experiences; Protecting & Empowering Workforce; Offsite & New Processing Practices; and Commercial, Retail & Ancillary Innovation to help create new revenues streams at the earliest opportunity. Our case study focused approach will help to champion innovations from around the world, all in keeping with our “Relaunching global air transport” theme.
The conference will include dedicated Asia-Pacific, EMEA and Americas content, and interactive conference sessions will run throughout the day to ensure that everyone can get the most out of the education on offer regardless of their location or time zone. Our auditorium sessions will also be complemented by our On-Demand Speaker Zone, where we will have a wealth of specially recorded presentations ready to go as soon as attendees visit the event, plus as a new addition for 2021 we will host free-to-attend sessions for all attendees and will provide a wealth of quality education sessions on our Expo floor.
The Agenda
Our 2021 Auditorium Agenda is currently under development, but to give you a sense of the quality and focus of our sessions please find below our 2020 agenda.

- What is the role of the passenger in the new tomorrow? How will trends and expectations shape what it is to come next?
- Are there modifications to the cabin interior that can be achieved in the short-term with a moderate budget rather than capital-intensive changes which are likely to take several years to introduce?
- How might airlines adapt approaches they make to service on domestic versus international flights in the long term?
- As airlines put more planes back in the sky can the current cleaning regime be maintained and improved, and how does the panel see new standards of inflight cleanliness becoming a part of every journey?
- What about the challenges of onboard product – blankets, duvets, pillows, etc; will we need to rethink the practicalities as we move into a new normal?
- What more can we do to bring back the joy of travelling and deliver a real hospitality experience onboard?
- How will the role of technology continue to evolve onboard?
Exclusive: The FTE APEX Business Model Transformation Think Tank

The FTE APEX Business Model Transformation Think Tank will explore and identify how airlines, airports and their partners can embrace new approaches and collaborate more closely to solve long-running industry challenges and frustrations that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis. Reducing cost bases, improving processes, and creating new revenue-generating opportunities throughout the end-to-end air travel experience will be among the core areas of focus.
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the fragility of the air transport industry as well as the need for industry stakeholders to work more closely together to future-proof their business strategies and models. With this in mind the Think Tank team, consisting of a selection of industry experts, will consider what airports, airlines and their partners can do differently going forward to help drive a faster and stronger recovery for all. They will explore new potential business models, agree recommendations and, in the longer term, explore the viability of real-world trials to test out the efficacy of the proposed new models. The initial recommendations will be presented during FTE APEX Virtual Expo.

AREAS OF FOCUS
- Services – in this “new normal” should airlines (or other third-parties) take direct responsibility for baggage, check-in, lounges, boarding, inflight catering, transport (or TNCs), etc, and which services should they outsource to airports or suppliers and can the revenue be shared?
- Baggage – are there opportunities to collaborate on baggage delivery services to reduce the reliance on traditional baggage handling systems, reduce associated costs, and create new revenues?
- Retail/F&B – are there opportunities for airlines and airports to collaborate on end-to-end mobile-based retail and F&B services?
- Media Content/Entertainment – are there opportunities to collaborate and leverage new media partnerships to offer passengers paid-for access to entertainment for consumption at the airport, onboard IFE-less aircraft, and post-travel?
- Loyalty Programmes – are there opportunities to collaborate on joint airline/airport loyalty programmes to improve the passenger experience and create new revenue streams?
- Health Screening/Biosecurity – are there opportunities to collaborate more closely to drive the development of an industry-wide health screening platform to support the industry’s recovery from the COVID-19 crisis and future health crises?

Navigating Content Disruption
OPTION 2
Overview
Consumers are increasingly turning towards connected television, movie and audio streaming platforms, thereby transforming the landscape of how content is available and the ways distributors, content owners and storytellers reach target audiences. In this session we will hear how a traditional broadcaster is innovating to create new products and services to meet the needs of the audience, and how a technology company continues to innovate in content on digital platforms. We will also hear from airlines on how the reduced volume and window of availability of content is impacting the offering today and their plans for the future, and how their partners are meeting this need. Finally, we will hear from a new connectivity provider to airlines and other platforms on how emerging satellite technology will meet the need to provide vast amounts of seamless Wi-Fi to deliver content with an at-home experience.
Format
Following a scene-setting presentation from the moderator, the panellists will discuss transformational activity in the IFE content space, and the right approaches for airlines and their partners to take going forward.

Topics to be discussed
- What are the long-term ramifications of the reduction in supply of content to certain channels like airlines?
- What impacts will there be from the change in behaviour of the customer (who is getting more and more content, games and audio through their own subscriptions) due to their experience at home and in the mobile world?
- What will be the impact of the change in availability of the window for the content which is available, and how will airlines move their budgets and focus accordingly?
- How do airlines and CSPs see their content offering changing in the next five years and what is going to be the biggest enabler to achieve this?
- What opportunities and threats do these changes pose for airlines and suppliers, and what areas should they each be investing in now when money is scarce?
- What is the biggest issue CSPs have right now, and what do they want to see resolved to deliver an experience for the future?
- Is inflight Wi-Fi going to be able to meet the need from airlines to offer the experience their customers want from streaming platforms?
- What does the industry need to see from the streaming platforms to be able to manage the demand?
- Will we benefit from technology advancements to support mobile devices on the ground with smaller data needs; e.g. Gen Y with small data plan but still wanting to stream away from home?
- Connectivity providers offer a real opportunity to reduce a long and convoluted supply chain, which studios are happy to offer content sooner through. Does the type of connectivity matter; e.g. LEO, GEO and who should lead this to make the difference to enable content owners to get content to a new audience, airlines to meet the customer need, and a CSP to remain relevant and provide a real time delivery service?

Questions to consider
- Following COVID-19, will biometrics play a key role in delivering the contactless airport experience that passengers will desire?
- Following the high number of redundancies caused by COVID-19, will airlines and airports look more closely at automation to fill the manpower void as passenger traffic returns?
- How can we address concerns about data security and privacy around biometrics in air travel?
- What are the key ingredients to making biometrics a palatable part of an airline or airport’s business case?
- How can we get key organisations like U.S. CBP and TSA on the same page about integrating biometric technology?
- How does airport infrastructure need to be adapted to support biometric-enabled queue-less travel?
- How can the industry address problems with different levels of lighting impacting readership/capturing of images?
- How can you deal with passengers trying to hack the system – such as using images on a phone screen or disguises?
- Is biometric-powered processing the right approach for all airports, large and small?
- How can we avoid stakeholders taking different approaches with their biometric efforts and delivering different messages to policy makers?
- Can we establish trust with passengers and regulatory bodies through open and transparent working relationships to help drive the business case forward?
- What role can biometrics play in the travel experience beyond the airport (e.g. inflight, hotels, cruise terminals, offsite check-in etc)?
- Will biometrics become tied to ‘health passport’ efforts?
