Kiran Merchant, CEO of Merchant Aviation, discusses the latest trends in terminal design and the technological advancements that will drive change.

The completion of Auckland Airport’s international Pier B extension is a key milestone in the airport’s 30-year vision to build the airport of the future.

The new $229.4 million facility will improve the processing experience for passengers with reduced wait times and a more welcoming environment.

On 3 May, Aeroflot started the gradual transfer of its flights to the new facility, which will eventually serve all domestic flights at Sheremetyevo International Airport.

YOTEL will introduce its clever design and use of technology in two zones at Istanbul New Airport – one airside (102 rooms) and one landside (349 rooms).

The new terminal features a raft of technologies, including self-service bag drop, automated immigration and robot guides, and boasts a true sense of place.

The new South Gates area, which will be used mainly by Aer Lingus for short-haul flights, has five boarding gates serving nine aircraft parking stands.

By mid-2019, the redeveloped domestic terminal will offer self-service bag drop, enhanced self-service kiosks, and a dedicated Premium Entry.

Auckland Airport has announced further details of the upgrade of its international departure area, including some of the new brands that will feature in its international retail hub.

Changi Airport’s Terminal 4 is now open, with Cathay Pacific and Korean Air operating flights to and from the new facility on the first day of operations.

The full dress rehearsal on 24 October involved about 1,500 airport staff, tenants and participants, and included final systems checks.

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, Frontier and Spirit will relocate their operations from 9 December 2017.

The vision includes additional parking, more gates, new security lanes and an expanded international processing facility, plus the best of Music City.

Technology is at the heart of the new T4, which will be the first terminal at Changi Airport to offer end-to-end Fast and Seamless Travel (FAST) for departing passengers.

The expansion is due to be completed by summer 2018 and will see the South East Pier extended to create new boarding gates and seating areas.
