Passengers at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol can now exchange their leftover euros for Bitcoin or Ethereum at a “Bitcoin ATM”, which is being trialled at the airport.

Following in the footsteps of the likes of Schiphol and Dubai International, Hamburg Airport is exploring the potential of gate delivery for F&B.

The BARTA (Brands, Airlines, Retailers, Technology, Airports) trial, which began in March, involves a unique collaboration between Budapest Airport, Heinemann Duty Free and Wizz Air.

The trial will allow passengers travelling to and from Sydney Airport to search and purchase duty free inventory in-app throughout their journey.

The BARTA initiative goes beyond the existing airport-retailer-brand relationship, bringing an airline into the mix for the first time.

easyJet’s ‘Hands Free’ baggage service allows passengers to check in their hand luggage at a bag drop desk, where the bag will be tagged as priority.

Passengers will be able to purchase products from multiple airport retailers and collect all of their items from a single collection point at the airport.

The ‘BARTA’ initiative could create up to €800,000 in Wizz Air Café sales, and boost revenues for Budapest Airport and Heinemann Duty Free.

Customers of Lufthansa Group will now be able to pay with Amadeus Airport Pay for ancillary services while checking in.

Strata Club members will receive personalised information, services and retail offers when they are travelling through Auckland Airport.

Future Travel Experience Ancillary, the world’s leading digital airline retailing show, will be held at the RDS in Dublin, 26-27 June.

Travellers flying from Frankfurt Airport can now order duty free items online and have them delivered directly to an address within Germany.

Passengers flying from Brussels South Charleroi Airport can browse more than 5,000 products online and opt to have them delivered to their home.

Fraport and Gebr. Heinemann have agreed to establish a joint venture that will run a total of 27 duty free and travel retail stores at Frankfurt Airport.

Fraport’s Kai Schmidhuber speaks to FTE about the Multichannel project and how the combination of stationary retailing and digitalisation is proving key to driving sales.

FTE speaks to Seateroo, SeatBoost and Seatfrog to find out how important mobile apps are becoming as a source of ancillary revenue for airlines.
